ChatGPT can do far more than answer questions. Used well, it can become a writing partner, research assistant, brainstorming companion, teacher, planner, and even a second set of eyes when you're trying to make an important decision. The difference often comes down to one simple thing: how you ask.
That's where prompts come in. A prompt is simply the instruction you give ChatGPT, but the more clearly you describe what you want, the more useful the response tends to be. Instead of asking, “Tell me about Social Security,” for example, you might ask ChatGPT to explain Social Security to someone approaching retirement, avoid financial jargon, provide real-world examples, and identify the five things worth remembering. Same subject—much more useful result.
The chart below contains 10 powerful ChatGPT prompts you can copy, personalize, and use immediately. They're designed to handle some of the things people commonly turn to ChatGPT for: explaining complicated subjects, summarizing long documents, improving writing, generating ideas, creating step-by-step plans, researching topics, reviewing your work, comparing choices, creating content, and learning new skills.
And don't be intimidated by the brackets—[TOPIC], [GOAL], [ARTICLE], [SKILL], and similar words are simply placeholders. Replace them with whatever you're working on. “[TOPIC]” could become Medicare, strength training after 50, or how artificial intelligence works. “[GOAL]” could become retire at 65, lose 10 pounds, plan a trip to Italy, or start a small business.
You can also keep the conversation going. If the first answer isn't quite what you wanted, tell ChatGPT what to change: “Make this simpler.” “Give me an example.” “Go deeper on number four.” “Challenge my assumptions.” “Turn this into a checklist.” You don't have to start over every time.
Think of the prompts in this chart as starting points rather than magic words. Copy one, fill in the blanks, experiment with it, and then refine the response until it becomes genuinely useful to you.
The better you learn to ask, the more useful ChatGPT becomes. Curiosity is still the most important technology in the room.
