3M Wonewok

Wonewok has always been a name wrapped in mystique—an exclusive retreat near Park Rapids, Minnesota, reserved for company executives, high-ranking clients, and special guests. It was a place we heard about in passing, whispered like a legend among the rank and file. For decades, as a loyal 3M employee, I worked hard, put in my time, and always wondered what it would be like to step foot on that pristine estate.

But like so many others, I never had the chance. Wonewok remained out of reach, an invitation that never arrived.

Now, after years of working for 3M and finally stepping into retirement, something unexpected has happened: Wonewok is being sold. And for the first time, I finally have the opportunity to visit this once-forbidden retreat—not as an employee, but on my own terms.

The Legend of Wonewok

Wonewok has always been a symbol of prestige within 3M. Nestled among towering pines and overlooking the serene waters of a northern Minnesota lake, it was a hidden gem that few ever got to experience. Originally built as a private lodge in the early 20th century, Wonewok became a corporate retreat where 3M’s top executives hosted elite clients, conducted high-level meetings, and enjoyed a setting that was as inspiring as it was relaxing.

For those of us who worked in the trenches of 3M—whether in manufacturing, research, sales, or administration—Wonewok was like a secret club we could never join. We heard stories of its beauty, its rustic yet elegant accommodations, and the incredible service provided to those lucky enough to visit. But for the majority of 3M employees, it remained just that—a story.

The Feeling of Being Left Out

I spent decades of my life dedicated to 3M. I took pride in my work, contributed to the company’s success, and was always grateful for the career it provided me. But there was always that one lingering disappointment: Wonewok.

It wasn’t necessarily about entitlement—3M was a massive company, and not everyone could be invited to a private retreat. But when you’ve poured your heart into a company, it stings a little to know that there’s this incredible place that symbolizes the success of 3M, and you’re never going to be able to set foot there.

There were times when I saw colleagues, usually higher-ups, return from Wonewok with a kind of reverent glow, talking about how incredible the food was, how peaceful the lake looked at sunrise, or how the fishing was second to none. I’d smile and nod, genuinely happy for them, but deep down, I always wondered what it would be like to experience it for myself.

But that was just how it was. Wonewok wasn’t for employees like me.

Retirement and an Unexpected Opportunity

Retirement has been a time of reflection for me. After decades of working, it’s a strange adjustment to suddenly have time to yourself, to not be caught up in the day-to-day grind. I’ve enjoyed the freedom—more time with my family, hobbies, and the ability to travel. Then, I read the news: 3M was selling Wonewok.

It caught me off guard. This place that had been so exclusive, so off-limits to me and thousands of other employees, was suddenly up for grabs. And more importantly, it meant that for the first time, people outside the executive bubble might finally have the chance to visit.

Visiting Wonewok

For me, this isn't just a news headline—it is a call to action. I will make plans to visit Wonewok after it has officially transitioned to new ownership. I can imagine driving up the winding roads toward Park Rapids feeling an odd mix of excitement and nostalgia. For years, this trip had been nothing more than a dream, and now, here I am—no longer a 3M employee, but finally walking through the gates of Wonewok. My hope is that the moment I arrive, I will understand why it is so revered. I imagine the grounds are immaculate, a perfect blend of nature and refinement. The towering pines casting long shadows over the trails, the lake shimmering in the late afternoon sun, and the log cabins looking like something out of a luxury travel magazine.

I will take my time exploring, breathing in the fresh northern Minnesota air. I will walk along the shoreline, taking in the same views that so many executives had enjoyed over the years. I will imagine the conversations that had taken place here—big deals, strategic plans, moments that shaped 3M’s future.

But for me, this visit won't be about business. It will be about closure. It will be about finally seeing a place I had spent years wondering about and experiencing it for myself, on my own terms.

The Irony of It All

There is something deeply ironic about the whole situation. For years, Wonewok had been off-limits, and now that I am no longer a 3M employee, I will finally walk its trails, sit by its fire pits, and soak in the very atmosphere I had always been curious about. I will think about all the other 3M employees who had longed to visit but never got the chance. I can't be alone in this feeling. In a way, stepping onto Wonewok’s grounds will feel like a small victory—not just for me, but for every employee who had dedicated their life to the company without ever getting that golden ticket invitation.

Looking Back, Moving Forward

My hope is that while I'm sitting on the dock, watching the sun dip below the trees, I will feel a sense of peace. I finally made it. And while Wonewok’s legacy with 3M is coming to an end, it is beginning a new chapter—one that might finally be open to people like me. Retirement is often about letting go of things you couldn’t change in the past. But every now and then, life surprises you and gives you a second chance. For me, Wonewok is that second chance. And I am not going to waste it.
