When I look back over the last 50 years of my life, I realize how much of it was spent moving. Moving toward goals. Moving toward success. Moving toward the next achievement that I thought would finally make me feel like I had “arrived.” Like many people of my generation, I grew up believing that hard work was the path to a meaningful life, and to be fair, hard work did open many doors for me.

Hollywood’s Summer 2025: Sequels, Reboots, and the Creative Conundrum
I just finished reading today's (5/7/2025) Star Tribune and there was a section devoted to "Summer's Biggest Movies". While I am looking forward to Tom Cruise (his stunts are AMAZING) and the Mission Impossible series opening on May 23rd, there is little else out there to get excited about.
As the summer of 2025 unfolds, Hollywood’s cinematic landscape is dominated by a familiar pattern: a heavy reliance on sequels, reboots, and franchise extensions. This trend raises concerns about the industry’s creative direction and its implications for moviegoers and the box office alike.
The Sequel Saturation
This summer’s release calendar is replete with continuations of established franchises. Notable entries include:
• “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning”: Potentially Tom Cruise’s swan song as Ethan Hunt, this installment aims to cap off the long-running action series.
• “Jurassic World Rebirth”: Reviving the prehistoric saga with a new cast, the film seeks to reignite the dinosaur-driven excitement.
• “The Fantastic Four: First Steps”: Marvel’s latest attempt to integrate the iconic superhero team into its cinematic universe.
• “M3GAN 2.0”: A follow-up to the techno-thriller, continuing the tale of the AI-powered doll.
• “28 Years Later”: Extending the zombie apocalypse narrative, this sequel arrives nearly three decades after the original.
The prevalence of such sequels underscores Hollywood’s strategy of banking on established intellectual properties to attract audiences.
Reboots and Remakes: Nostalgia or Necessity?
In addition to sequels, the industry is revisiting and reimagining past successes:
• “Freaky Friday”: A modern take on the body-swap comedy, aiming to introduce the story to a new generation.
• “How to Train Your Dragon”: Transitioning from animation to live-action, this adaptation seeks to capture the magic of the original trilogy.
• “The Smurfs”: A fresh rendition of the blue characters, blending contemporary themes with classic charm.
While these projects aim to tap into audience nostalgia, they also highlight a cautious approach to content creation, favoring familiar narratives over novel ideas.
Box Office Trends: A Mixed Picture
The financial performance of these releases presents a complex scenario. Marvel’s “Thunderbolts” launched the summer season with a global opening of $162 million, indicating strong interest in superhero fare. However, overall box office figures reveal a decline. As of early May, U.S. and Canadian ticket sales are down 7% compared to the same period in 2024, with March experiencing a particularly sharp drop of 50% year-over-year.
This downturn suggests that while individual films may perform well, the broader industry faces challenges in sustaining audience engagement.
The Creative Impasse
Critics and audiences alike have voiced concerns about the industry’s creative direction. The dominance of sequels and reboots has led to perceptions of stagnation, with fewer original stories making it to the big screen. This trend not only limits diversity in storytelling but also risks alienating viewers seeking fresh narratives.
Moreover, the emphasis on franchise films may overshadow smaller, independent projects that often bring innovation and unique perspectives to cinema.
Looking Ahead: The Need for Innovation
For Hollywood to rejuvenate its creative landscape and revitalize the box office, a shift towards original content is imperative. Investing in new stories, supporting emerging filmmakers, and taking calculated risks can pave the way for a more dynamic and engaging cinematic experience.
As audiences become increasingly discerning, the industry’s ability to adapt and innovate will determine its long-term success. Let's have more shows like Hidden Figures (2016), The Help (2011), The King's Speech (2010), Apollo 13 (1995). Excellent films that balance historical accuracy with compelling storytelling - and are genuinely great to watch. What other examples can you come up with?

8 Rules of Love
Jay Shetty’s 8 Rules of Love explores how people can create deeper, healthier, and more meaningful relationships by combining ancient wisdom, modern psychology, and practical self-awareness. Rather than viewing love as something that simply happens, Shetty argues that love is a skill that can be learned, practiced, and improved over time. Each “rule” represents a different stage or principle of building lasting connection — from learning to be alone to learning how to grow together and even how to let go when necessary.

The Energy You Bring Into The Room
There comes a point in life when most people realize that success, fulfillment, and meaningful relationships are not built entirely on talent, money, status, or appearance. They are built on something much harder to define but instantly recognizable when you experience it.
