Navigating Transitions
Life’s greatest shifts—whether retirement, an empty nest, or a new career phase—offer profound opportunities to redefine your relationships and yourself.

The Space Between What Was and What Will Be
Transitions are the thresholds we cross throughout life. They are rarely simple bridges; they often resemble deep waters we must wade through, letting go of old identities before we are fully ready to embrace new ones.
Whether you are stepping away from a lifelong career, adjusting to a quiet house after children have moved out, or stepping into a new phase of a long-term relationship, transitions demand something of us. They require patience, intentionality, and grace.
The challenge is not merely surviving the change, but utilizing the disruption to forge a clearer, more authentic path forward alongside those you love.
The Three Phases of Transition
According to transition expert William Bridges, change is external and situational, but transition is the internal psychological process we go through. It always unfolds in three distinct phases.
1. Endings
Every transition begins with an ending. We must let go of the old reality and the old identity before the new one can take place. This phase is often marked by grief, denial, and a sense of loss, even if the change is positive.
2. The Neutral Zone
The confusing, in-between time when the old is gone but the new isn't fully operational. It feels like wandering in the wilderness, but it is the fertile ground where real transformation, deep reflection, and repatterning occur.
3. New Beginnings
Emerging from the neutral zone with renewed energy, a fresh sense of purpose, and a clear vision for the next chapter. Relationships stabilize into new patterns, and a genuine sense of momentum returns to daily life.

Practical ways to protect your well-being and strengthen your relationships while the ground shifts beneath your feet.
Communicate the Unspoken
During transitions, unexpressed expectations become resentments. Talk openly with your partner about your fears, your shifting identity, and what you need from them right now. Give them permission to do the same.
Renegotiate Roles
Retirement or an empty nest often means the division of labor that worked for decades no longer makes sense. Sit down together and redesign your daily rhythms, chores, and routines based on your new reality.
Embrace the Wilderness
Resist the urge to rush through the "Neutral Zone." Sit with the discomfort of not knowing exactly what comes next. Use this time to experiment, take small risks, and discover what actually brings you joy in this season.
Establish New Anchors
When major structures (like a 9-to-5 job) disappear, build new, smaller anchors. A standing morning coffee date with your partner, a dedicated reading hour, or a weekly hike can provide the stability you need to weather the flux.

"Transition is not just a shifting of the scenery; it is a shifting of the soul. We must be willing to let go of the life we planned, so as to have the life that is waiting for us."— Joseph Campbell (adapted)
